Semarang, 29 June 2026 - IREEM recently joined strategic exploratory discussions with the Central Java Provincial Government to explore pathways for developing high-integrity blue carbon initiatives across the province. The conversation highlighted a shared understanding that successful blue carbon projects must go beyond carbon credits by strengthening coastal livelihoods, improving mangrove conservation, and creating long-term value for local communities.

Central Java possesses significant mangrove restoration potential, although most ecosystems are fragmented and located on community-owned land. This reinforces the importance of adopting a landscape approach that integrates ecosystem restoration, community stewardship, and sustainable financing rather than treating carbon as a stand-alone objective.

The discussion also highlighted the value of aligning existing conservation initiatives and climate finance investments to maximise collective impact. Mapping ongoing programmes, identifying funding gaps, and building an investable pipeline will be essential to scale nature-based solutions for coastal resilience, biodiversity, and climate mitigation.

For IREEM, blue carbon represents not only an environmental opportunity, but also a governance and development agenda where science, policy, finance, and communities must advance together.
